Martin McGinn was born and raised on the prairies of Iowa. Although he is now rooted in Oakland, California, the sonic landscape of rural Iowa continues to resonate deeply through his music. His recent work deals with memory, timelessness and the sensuous beauty of sound.
Martin’s music has been performed by the University of Iowa Center for New Music, the New York Miniaturist Ensemble, the Orpheus Chamber Music Ensemble and the Mills College Contemporary Performance Ensemble. His music was presented on the 2009 Fresno New Music Festival and TRANSreveLATION 2007, a concert of music dealing with the translation of visual media into sound.
Martin holds degrees in composition from Mills College (MA, 2005) and the University of Iowa (BM, 2003). His principal teachers have included Pauline Oliveros, Dimitri Papageorgiou, Fred Frith and David Gompper. He is a member of the American Composers Forum and ASCAP.
Under the pseudonym Art Elliot Martin pursues a career as a singer/songwriter. Aside from his work as a composer Martin currently works at Berkeley City College Library and is the pianist/organist at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Alameda, California.
